fixando o ecrã do computador

faz outra coisa qualquer.

as bibliotecas do mundo
de tanto bocejar
adormeceram
a queimar as tuas entranhas,

in sifting through the madness for the Word, the line, the way, 2003

so you want to be a writer?

if it doesn’t come bursting out of you
in spite of everything,
don’t do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
and your gut,
don’t do it.
if you have to sit for hours
staring at your computer screen
or hunched over your
typewriter
searching for words,
don’t do it.
if you’re doing it for money or
fame,
don’t do it.
if you’re doing it because you want
women in your bed,
don’t do it.
if you have to sit there and
rewrite it again and again,
don’t do it.
if it’s hard work just thinking about doing it,
don’t do it.
if you’re trying to write like somebody
else,
forget about it.

if you have to wait for it to roar out of
you,
then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you,
do something else.

if you first have to read it to your wife
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
you’re not ready.

don’t be like so many writers,
don’t be like so many thousands of
people who call themselves writers,
don’t be dull and boring and
pretentious, don’t be consumed with self-
love.
the libraries of the world have
yawned themselves to
sleep
over your kind.
don’t add to that.
don’t do it.
unless it comes out of
your soul like a rocket,
unless being still would
drive you to madness or
suicide or murder,
don’t do it.
unless the sun inside you is
burning your gut,
don’t do it.

when it is truly time,
and if you have been chosen,
it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.

there is no other way.

and there never was.

Charles Bukowski, «Lança os dados»

Tradução de João Coles

se vais tentar, vai até ao
fim.
caso contrário, nem sequer comeces.

se vais tentar, vai até ao
fim.
Isto poderá significar perder namoradas,
esposas, parentes, empregos e
talvez o juízo.

vai até ao fim.
poderá significar não comer durante 3 ou 4 dias.
poderá significar enregelar num
banco de parque.
poderá significar cadeia,
poderá significar escárnio,
zombaria,
isolamento.
o isolamento é um dom,
tudo o resto é um teste à tua
resistência, do
quanto queres mesmo
fazer isso.
e tu fá-lo-ás
mal-grado a rejeição e as piores probabilidades
e será melhor do que
qualquer outra coisa
que possas imaginar.

se vais tentar,
vai até ao fim.
não há outra sensação como
esta.
e estarás a sós com os deuses
e as noites inflamar-se-ão com
o fogo.

fá-lo, fá-lo, fá-lo,
fá-lo.

até ao fim
até ao fim.

guiarás a vida directamente ao
riso perfeito. é
a única luta justa
que existe.

in The Singer, 1999

Roll the dice

if you’re going to try, go all the
way.
otherwise, don’t even start.

if you’re going to try, go all the
way.
this could mean losing girlfriends,
wives, relatives, jobs and
maybe your mind.

go all the way.
it could mean not eating for 3 or 4 days.
it could mean freezing on a
park bench.
it could mean jail,
it could mean derision,
mockery,
isolation.
isolation is the gift,
all the others are a test of your
endurance, of
how much you really want to
do it.
and you’ll do it
despite rejection and the worst odds
and it will be better than
anything else
you can imagine.

if you’re going to try,
go all the way.
there is no other feeling like
that.
you will be alone with the gods
and the nights will flame with
fire.

do it, do it, do it.
do it.

all the way
all the way.

you will ride life straight to
perfect laughter, it's
the only good fight
there is.

Charles Bukowski, "O triturar"

tradução de João Coles

de mais
de menos

demasiado gordo
demasiado magro
ou ninguém.

riso ou
lágrimas

os que odeiam
os que amam

estranhos com rostos como
a superfície de
pioneses

exércitos que percorrem
estradas de sangue
brandindo garrafas de vinho
baionetando e fodendo
virgens.

um velhote num quarto reles
com uma fotografia da M. Monroe.

há uma tão grande solidão neste mundo
que a podemos vislumbrar no movimento lerdo
dos ponteiros de um relógio

pessoas cansadas
mutiladas

cara a cara.

as nuvens vão nebular
e o assassino degolará a criança

caules
flores de oportunidade.

tem de haver uma maneira.

haverá decerto uma maneira que ainda não
pensámos.

quem pôs este cérebro dentro de mim?

ele chora
ele exige
ele diz que há esperança.

não dirá
“não.”

in Love is a Dog From Hell - 1977

The Crunch

too much
too little

too fat
too thin
or nobody.

laughter or
tears

haters
lovers

strangers with faces like
the backs of
thumb tacks

armies running through
streets of blood
waving wine bottles
bayoneting and fucking
virgins.

an old guy in a cheap room
with a photograph of M. Monroe.

there is a loneliness in this world so great
that you can see it in the slow movement of
the hands of a clock

people so tired
mutilated
either by love or no love.

people just are not good to each other
one on one.

the rich are not good to the rich

the poor are not good to the poor.

we are afraid.

our educational system tells us
that we can all be
big-ass winners.

it hasn't told us
about the gutters
or the suicides.

or the terror of one person
aching in one place
alone

untouched
unspoken to

watering a plant.

people are not good to each other.
people are not good to each other.
people are not good to each other.

I suppose they never will be.
I don't ask them to be.

but sometimes I think about
it.

the beads will swing
the clouds will cloud
and the killer will behead the child
like taking a bite out of an ice cream cone.

too much
too little

too fat
too thin
or nobody

more haters than lovers.

people are not good to each other.
perhaps if they were
our deaths would not be so sad.

meanwhile I look at young girls
stems
flowers of chance.

there must be a way.

surely there must be a way that we have not yet
thought of.

who put this brain inside of me?

it cries
it demands
it says that there is a chance.

it will not say
"no."

Charles Bukowski, «Oh sim», «A genialidade da multidão»

Tradução de João Coles

Oh sim

há coisas piores do que
estar sozinho
mas normalmente levamos décadas
a darmo-nos conta disso
e na maioria das vezes
quando nos damos conta
é tarde de mais
e não há nada pior
do que
tarde de mais.

De Love is a Dog From Hell

Oh yes

there are worse things than
being alone
but it often takes decades
to realize this
and most often
when you do
it's too late
and there's nothing worse
than
too late.

procura a banalidade

De The Roominghouse Madrigals: Early Selected Poems 1946-1966

The Genius of the Crowd

there is enough treachery, hatred violence absurdity in the average
human being to supply any given army on any given day

and the best at murder are those who preach against it
and the best at hate are those who preach love
and the best at war finally are those who preach peace

those who preach god, need god
those who preach peace do not have peace
those who preach peace do not have love

beware the preachers
beware the knowers
beware those who are always reading books
beware those who either detest poverty
or are proud of it
beware those quick to praise
for they need praise in return
beware those who are quick to censor
they are afraid of what they do not know
beware those who seek constant crowds for
they are nothing alone
beware the average man the average woman
beware their love, their love is average
seeks average

but there is genius in their hatred
there is enough genius in their hatred to kill you
to kill anybody
not wanting solitude
not understanding solitude
they will attempt to destroy anything
that differs from their own
not being able to create art
they will not understand art
they will consider their failure as creators
only as a failure of the world
not being able to love fully
they will believe your love incomplete
and then they will hate you
and their hatred will be perfect

like a shining diamond
like a knife
like a mountain
like a tiger
like hemlock

their finest art

Charles Bukowski, «Dinosauria, nós»

Tradução de João Coles

Nascemos assim
Nisto
Enquanto as caras de giz sorriem
Enquanto a Sr.ª Morte ri
Enquanto os elevadores se avariam
Enquanto as paisagens políticas se dissolvem
Enquanto o caixeiro do supermercado mostra o seu diploma
Enquanto o peixe sujo de petróleo cospe a presa oleosa
Enquanto o sol está mascarado

Nós
Nascemos assim
Nisto
Nestas guerras cuidadosamente loucas

Nascemos nisto
Passeando e sobrevivendo nisto
Morrendo por causa disto
Silenciados por causa disto
Castrados
Debochados
Deserdados
Por causa disto
Enganados por isto
Explorados por isto
Mijados em cima por isto
Enlouquecidos e adoecidos por isto
Feitos violentos
Desumanizados
Graças a isto

O coração escureceu
Os dedos procuram a garganta
A pistola
A faca
A bomba
Os dedos procuram alcançar um deus indiferente

Os dedos procuram a garrafa
O comprimido
O pó

Nascemos nesta mortalidade pesarosa
A terra será inútil
A comida será um retorno decrescente
O poder nuclear será tomado pela multidão
Explosões assolarão continuamente a Terra

As árvores morrerão
Toda a vegetação morrerá
Homens radioactivos comerão a carne de homens radioactivos
O mar será envenenado
Os lagos e os rios desaparecerão
A chuva será o novo ouro

À espera do próximo capítulo.

Dinosauria, We

Born like this
Into this
As the chalk faces smile
As Mrs. Death laughs
As the elevators break
As political landscapes dissolve
As the supermarket bag boy holds a college degree
As the oily fish spit out their oily prey
As the sun is masked

We are
Born like this
Into this
Into these carefully mad wars
Into the sight of broken factory windows of emptiness
Into bars where people no longer speak to each other
Into fist fights that end as shootings and knifings

Born into this
Into hospitals which are so expensive that it's cheaper to die
Into lawyers who charge so much it's cheaper to plead guilty
Into a country where the jails are full and the madhouses closed
Into a place where the masses elevate fools into rich heroes
Born into this
Walking and living through this
Dying because of this
Muted because of this
Castrated
Debauched
Disinherited
Because of this
Fooled by this
Used by this
Pissed on by this
Made crazy and sick by this
Made violent
Made inhuman
By this

The heart is blackened
The fingers reach for the throat
The gun
The knife
The bomb
The fingers reach toward an unresponsive god

The fingers reach for the bottle
The pill
The powder

We are born into this sorrowful deadliness
We are born into a government 60 years in debt
That soon will be unable to even pay the interest on that debt
And the banks will burn
Money will be useless
There will be open and unpunished murder in the streets
It will be guns and roving mobs
Land will be useless
Food will become a diminishing return
Nuclear power will be taken over by the many
Explosions will continually shake the earth
Radiated robot men will stalk each other
The rich and the chosen will watch from space platforms

Dante's Inferno will be made to look like a children's playground
The sun will not be seen and it will always be night
Trees will die
All vegetation will die
Radiated men will eat the flesh of radiated men
The sea will be poisoned
The lakes and rivers will vanish
Rain will be the new gold

The rotting bodies of men and animals will stink in the dark wind

The last few survivors will be overtaken by new and hideous diseases
And the space platforms will be destroyed by attrition
The petering out of supplies
The natural effect of general decay

And there will be the most beautiful silence never heard

Born out of that.

The sun still hidden there
Awaiting the next chapter
